General settings for lesson, assignment, documentation and assessment
The settings below mainly apply to activities of type lesson, assignment, documentation and assessment. The other activities have more specific settings and are described in separate articles.
Attempts / Score
In an assessment activity, you can set the number of attempts a learner has to complete the assessment. You can also define any score-related requirement. You can find more information in this article: 'Set up the assessment activity'.
Show learner ranking on result page*
If you have enabled the option "A scoreboard that shows the students how they performed in comparison to other learners" in the template settings, you can enable this option. If you do, learners will earn points, which are shown in a ranking. Learners can compare their scores, and see who gets the highest score.
Feedback
Give feedback
Define when learners see feedback for questions. You can decide that learners will only see their score, or that any feedback is only available from a certain date. By default, this is set to all after assessment. You can change that to one of the following options:
- Only score after assessment: after finishing the assessment, learners only see their score and not any feedback for specific answers. Choose this option if learners have multiple attempts to finish an assessment, and you do not want them to know the correct answers to specific questions.
- Only advice after assessment: after finishing the assessment, learners only see which activity is advised to do next.
- All / score / answers after date: pick a date on which all feedback, the learner's score, or just answers become available for the learner. Choose this option if you want to prevent learners from sharing their feedback with other learners who have not yet completed the assessment.
- None: learners see no feedback at all after finishing the assessment.
Show check button
Enable this option if you want to allow learners to check separate questions after answering them, and immediately receive feedback.
Time
Estimated duration of activity
Give the learners an indication of how long the activity lasts. This is shown in the learning journey.
Learners can use this indication to see how long the activity will approximately take.
Maximum duration
Enter the time within which the learner must complete the activity. Learners receive a pop-up when starting the activity, informing them about the time limit. Once the learner clicks "Start" in the pop-up, the timer starts ticking.
Learners will see no button to returning to the learning journey. Once the time runs out, any unanswered question is considered incorrect.
Navigation within activity
Allow learners to skip questions *
Learners do not necessarily have to answer a question. Unanswered questions will be marked incorrect by default once the answers are submitted. Questions that have been skipped, will be displayed in a light colour on the bottom left part of the screen.
If this option is unchecked, a pop-up will appear once the learner tries to skip a question. They will also get a warning that they can only continue once the question has been answered.
Allow learners to navigate back to alter their answers *
Learners are allowed to change answers to questions. They can do this by clicking the 'previous' button within the activity. Or by clicking on the numbers in the navigation at the bottom of the screen.
If this option is not enabled, learners will only see the 'Next' button, at the bottom right of the screen.
Back to overview (continue later)/Allow learners to leave the assessment, and continue later on (back to overview) *
Learners will see the 'Back to overview' button. The activity can be continued at a later date.
Other options
Learners mark the essay questions themselves* /
Instructors mark the essay questions*
Choose who can assess the open questions using the provided model answer.
If the instructor assesses the assignment, you can also check the option 'Activity can be reassessed'. Instructors can then change grades if the activity has already been assessed.
Show an indication for evaluation questions that there is no right or wrong answer - Option for lesson activities
With this setting, learners will see 'There is no right or wrong answer to this question.' next to each evaluation question.
This text can be customized in the look & feel (Description font, below 'Questions').
Make questions MemoTrainable after the activity has been finished *
Have questions become available in the MemoTrainer after the activity has been completed by the learner. Choose this option if you want to allow learners to have certain questions only MemoTrainable once they complete this activity.
Did you forget to check this option before publishing? You can always add additional questions to the MemoTrainer via the Extra MemoTrainable questions tab.
Discussions are allowed in this activity
You can turn the discussion option on/off for each activity. Learners can then post messages per question/content part in the activity and use it to communicate with each other. This option is only available if you enabled "Discussion board within activities" in the template settings.
Explanation at the start of the activity
The text or content part you select or add here will appear in a pop-up at the beginning of the activity. Use this option if you want to provide some extra information before the learner starts the activity.
Explanation at the end of the activity
The text or content part you select or add here will appear in a pop-up at the end of the activity. Use this option to provide information about the next steps or links to any related study material.
Advanced settings
You can add an External ID to the activity here, for example to use with the API.
Adding an external ID to an activity will also generate a QR code that can be scanned by the learner in the aNewSpring app. The learner will then navigated to that activity after scanning the QR code.
If you want to learn more about API and other integrations, make sure to read our article about API, Webhooks and Single Sign-On (SSO).
Testing activities
Make sure to test your activity before publishing it. Click on Update and test in the top-right corner of the activity. This allows you to check if you are using all the right settings, before publishing the activity.
