○ Tutorial: How can I 'replace' an activity in a published template
Scenario's
- You have an activity in your published template with incorrect settings and these settings can't be changed anymore because the activity has been published. You want to replace this activity for the same activity but with different settings.
- You want to add more content to an existing published activity but this specific activity doesn't allow you to add more content after publishing so a new activity should be created.
Required roles
Designer
It is always possible to add activities and blocks to a published template. Therefore you can replace published activities for a new version of the activity, publish this new version of the new activity in the template and hide the old activity.
In some cases it is possible to change the settings of a published activity and then it's not necessary to 'replace' the activity. In the article below you can read what you can change in published activities and what can't be changed anymore:
○ Activities and what you can and cannot change after publishing
If it's not possible anymore to change the published activity, the activity can be 'replaced' by following the steps described below:
1. Copy the activity and change the content and/or settings. You can also create a new activity, link content and set up the correct settings.
In the article below you can read more about copying activities:
○ Copy activities (also from other templates)
2. If all settings are correct in the new activity, you can publish the activity in the template by clicking the globe icon () or when editing the activity by clicking the Publish button in the activity.
If there is one or more course under the template, you will see a pop up to also publish the activity in these courses.
3. To prevent that both activities (the old and the new one) are still both published and visible for learners, you can hide the old activity. Read in the article below how to hide an activity:
○ Hiding activities
The old activity is now no longer visible for the learners. This also means that the progress on the old activity is no longer visible for them and the achieved result isn't shown anymore.
4. Once published, change the name of the 'wrong' activity (for example 'activity name + Old') and change the name of the new activity to the original name of the activity you were using.
This to prevent that the same activity name is shown twice when running a report or when setting up conditions on an activity, you can choose between the same activity names and you select the wrong activity in the condition.
Publish/depublish an activity on course level
If the activity has only been published in the template ad not in the courses, this can still be done at a later time.
Also when you want to depublish the activity only on course level at a later time, this can be done via the settings page of a course via the Activities tab:
○ Course settings - Tab: Activities
Copying a template
You can also copy the whole template and make changes there. This template will be published separately and so new courses should be created under this template.
You can copy a template via the Templates page. Click the More button next to the template and click Copy.
