★ Tutorial: Create a knowledge base with compact styling and without a learning journey learning line
Scenarios
- You would like to create a place for learners in which it is not necessary to complete all activities and there is no emphasis on the order of activities.
- You would like to give your employees access to a knowledge database which support them in exercising their position. (Performance support)
- You would like to build a community in which learners can be in touch with each other under the supervision of an expert.
- You would like to give learners the opportunity to consult the content after completing a training.
Which roles do you need?
Designer
Go to the Templates tab.
Step 1) Create a template
Click the + Template button and choose the template type.
Step 2) Change the settings of the template
Check the option Enable a more compact style for the learning journey. This changes the interface of the learning journey and it can give the learner the impression that the order in which they complete activities is not important.
Note-taking can be a valuable addition for learners. This allows them to create bookmarks for themselves so they can easily navigate to the desired page.
If you don't use the MemoTrainer, also uncheck the option Retention training with the MemoTrainer so learners will not see any knowledge intake progress.
Step 3) Prepare blocks and activities
After you have selected the desired content under the Content Management tab in this template, you can add blocks and activities under the Template tab.
For a knowledge base, add Documentation activities. These are activities that learners can do voluntarily. There is no Start button in the overview, but a Review button. You can only add content parts to this type of activity.
Under the Properties tab of the activity, you can uncheck the option Discussions are allowed in this activity and enable notes.
Tip: Use sections to create an index that is visible from the overview.
You can always add more content to Documentation or Lesson activities or remove content, even after the template has been published. This way you can always keep you knowledge base up to date.
Step 4) Remove unnecessary widgets
Not all widgets will be necessary for a knowledge base.
You can remove them by clicking .
By removing Results, the progress bar will disappear from the overview.
You can put removed widgets back by using the drop-down menu.
Step 5) Set up the personal advice
Advice above the activities and at the end of an activity will not be necessary. You can change these settings under the Template settings tab by expanding the Activity advice pane.
For example, choose Always go back to the learning journey overview after completing an activity and disable Advice for next activity will be shown at the top of the learning journey.
Now you will see the button 'Back to overview' at the end of the activity instead of 'Continue'.
The result
The overview is clean and simple with alternative styling; the blocks and activities get a simplified view. There will be no learning journey timeline on the left-hand side of the activities, so learners don't get advice on which activity to open next.
In the example below, all widgets have been turned off, except for 'Search'. As you might have noticed from the screenshot below, learners can only discuss their experiences in the final activity.
