Adaptive learning means that the offered learning material adapts to the learner. The aim of this is that learners reach the final goal at their own pace and level. Not every learner has as much prior knowledge as the rest. Adaptive learning offers a solution for this.

The MemoTrainer

In aNewSpring you have several possibilities to make a learning journey adaptive. You can do this on a small scale by repeating questions in the MemoTrainer. How often the questions are repeated depends on the mistakes made.

Find out how you can do this in Making questions available in the MemoTrainer

An adaptive learning journey

You can also do it on a larger scale by making the activities in the learning journey adaptive. In this way, not every learner goes through the same learning journey, but each learner will be offered activities about a certain learning objective until the objective level has been reached. You can also set this up in combination with the MemoTrainer.

The Tutorial: Creating an adaptive learning journey for learners can help you setting up such an adaptive learning journey

Before you start that tutorial, it is good to realise that there are a number of essential keys to making the adaptive learning path a success.

Key 1: Take your time

Set aside enough time to plan and build the learning journey. It takes time to work out a concept, define the right learning objectives, and questions.

Key 2: Consider your learning objectives

You can find good tips on how to define learning objectives online. To get the most out of adaptivity, it is important to use very specific learning objectives. Ideally, questions are interchangeable. Let's use a course about English language as an example. Having 'Grammar' as a learning objective is not specific enough. You should instead use learning objectives like interpunction, plurals, and compositions.

If you want to know if your learning objective is specific enough, think about how much text you would need to describe it. You could fill pages with a definition of 'Grammar', but you could describe 'Interpunction' in a few paragraphs.

Key 3: Create many questions per learning objective

Having many questions per learning objective gives learners a variety of possible questions, and prevents them from doing the same question multiple times.

Key 4: Create enough activities per learning objective

If you have many questions per learning objective, you can also create more varied activities. This is important in an adaptive learning journey, as learners might do multiple activities per learning objective.
