In this article, we will get you started with creating competencies within collections. If you want to learn more about the basic concepts of profiles and competencies, make sure to read our article P&C - Core concepts

1) Activate profiles and competencies in your environment

Go to . Under Additional Features, activate Profiles and competencies

You will then see the option  appearing in your navigation.

Roles required:

Administrator

2) Add certificates to your templates

Every competency must be linked to a certificate in a learning journey. Once a learner acquires that certificate, they complete the linked competency.

You can find more information on how to create certificates in the following article: create and add a certificate.

If the linked certificate has an expiry date, the competency will have the same expiry date. This could mean that a completed profile is no longer completed once a competency expires.

3) Create competency collections

Before you can create competencies, you have to create a collection. All competencies are sorted into collections, allowing you to manage and sort by, for example, project or theme.

Click , and then select the tab Collections

Click  to add a new collection.

You only have to give your collection a name. Learners will not see the collection and its name.

4) Add competencies to the collection

Once you have created a collection, you can create a competency by clicking .

5) Select the certificate activities you want to link to a competency

In step 2, we've made sure to include certificates in your templates. In this step we will link these certificates to competencies.

a) Select on which level you want to link certificates

In the competency, click . You will now see list with all your templates (including unpublished templates) and courses.

You can now decide on which level you want to link certificates to the competency.

Template level

If you select a template, a competency will be linked to a certificate activity for all courses of that template. This will also apply to courses you create later.

Course level

Select course level if you want to link the competency to a certificate within a specific course.

You can also link a certificate on both levels. First, link it on course level, and then on template level.

Click Next to continue.

b) Select the certificate

Select the certificate you want to link to the competency.

You can link a competency to multiple certificate activities. When a learner acquires one of them, they complete the competency.

Does the certificate have an expiry date? Make sure to link the renewal certificate to the same competency then. Once the first certificate expires, the learner can acquire the renewal certificate and complete the competency again.

Once you have linked your certificates to the competencies, you can go back to your collections to make more competencies.

Under the tab Competencies, you can always find all competencies.
