Scenarios

  • You want the focus for the learners to be more on achieving the learning objectives.
  • You want to give learners an overview of how they are doing in achieving the learning goals directly in the learning journey.
  • You want to encourage learners to choose for themselves which learning objectives they want to work on first.

What role do you need?

This is an alternative way to display adaptive blocks for Step 6 of the Tutorial: Create an adaptive Learning journey for learners.

What exactly do learners see with this view?

  • The objectives and the progress are displayed at the top of the block. You do not see the activities in the learning journey immediately.
  • If an objective is not yet at 100%, you will see a start or continue button. By clicking on it, learners can choose from a list of activities that contain that learning objective.
  • When a goal is set to 100%, the check mark at a learning objective turns green and the start button disappears.
  • Activities that have been completed are displayed below the goals and can be opened and viewed again.

Set the alternative view

Click the tab and to the right of a template with an adaptive learning journey.

You have to set the alternative view per block. To do this, at the Template tab, click at an adaptive block.

Next, select the option Alternative adaptive block layout.

By default, the objectives with the lowest score are shown at the top of the list. You can adjust this by Sorting the learning objectives from the highest to lowest score.

Tip 1) Think carefully about the structure of the adaptive blocks

All learning objectives that occur in a block are shown at the top of the block.

When you create multiple blocks that contain activities with the same learning objective, that objective will also be displayed in each block.

Tip 2) Turn on the advice

The advice is shown at the top of the learning journey and gives learners a suggestion for an activity that would be best to start with. By default, this is the first available activity, but you can also make it work with adaptivity.

Learners then see an activity with the learning objective that they will be working on and that will help the most in achieving the learning objectives.

Read more about it in Setting up personal learner advice.

Tip 3) Enable the compact view of the learning journey

If you have created multiple adaptive blocks and it does not matter which learning objectives are worked on first, you might consider activating a compact representation of the learning journey. In the first screenshot of this article you can see that this option is turned on. This also removes the vertical learning line on the left.

The dot in the learning line normally indicates where you, as a learner, are in the journey. The dot in combination with the alternative display of adaptive blocks, will remain on the first block until all learning objectives have been achieved. Then it will move on to the next block.

Tip 4) Release new learning objectives when others have been completed

When it does matter in which order the learning objectives are offered, you can forget tip 3 and get started with this one.

How to add conditions is explained in scenario A of the article Using conditions in an adaptive learning path.

Tip 5) Release a certificate when learning objectives have been achieved

With the condition of tip 4 you can also release a certificate if all learning objectives are at 100%.

More explanation can be found in scenario B of the article mentioned in tip 4.
