The retention is based on the progress of questions that have been made MemoTrainable. learners will see this reflected in the Retention progress bar.

In What is the MemoTrainer? you can read more about the theory behind the MemoTraining.

The progress bar 'Retention' is only visible when the template functionality 'Retention training with the MemoTrainer' is turned on.

The questions in the MemoTrainer

Questions can be released in 3 ways in the MemoTrainer and thus also influence the progress of the retention:

  • By direct MemoTrainable questions
These questions are immediately available at the start of the learning journey.
  • After an activity is completed.
  • Extra MemoTrainable questions.
These questions are selected as extra MemoTrainable for an activity and are released when the activity is completed, but are not necessarily offered in the activity itself.

Read more about this in Making questions available in the MemoTrainer.

The retention per question and the training level

The knowledge intake of a specific question is 100% if that question is answered correctly X number of times in a row. If a question is answered incorrectly, the knowledge intake of that specific question goes back to 0%.

How often a question must be answered correctly (X) depends on the training level set in the MemoTrainer settings:

  • No repetition - 1x
  • Sufficient - 2x
  • Adequate - 3x
  • Good - 4x
  • Very good - 5x
  • Excellent - 6x

The training level is set to 'Adequate' by default and can be adjusted by learners.

The total knowledge intake and the increase and decrease of the percentage

The total retention you see is the combined percentage of all questions that are MemoTrainable at that time.

Questions that haven't been released, because the activities in which they are included are not completede yet, do not count.

As a result, the retention may drop each time activities are completed.

Practicing with the MemoTrainer

The MemoTrainer offers a MemoTraining on set days, provided that there are questions in turn. The closer the retention of a specific question is to 100%, the longer the intervals are during which a question returns in a MemoTraining.

There will be no more MemoTrainings if the learner has achieved 100% retention.

Would the learner still like to practice more? Then it helps to set the training level a bit higher, or to generate an extra exercise.

The drill option will be available after completing a MemoTraining. The questions that have been answered incorrectly by the learner, can be practiced again in the drill.
Repeating the incorrectly answered questions in the drill doesn't count for the retention of the learner. If the learner answers the questions correctly during the drill, the retention will not increase.

MemoTraining based on objectives

You can also set in the template that the MemoTrainer trains based on learning objectives instead of the individual questions. In that case, the retention per specific question is not relevant, but a learning objective has to be answered correctly X times in a row and that can be any question from that learning objective.

The total retention is then the combined percentage of the retention of all learning objectives together. In a MemoTraining, a maximum of 1 question per learning objective is then offered at a time.

You will find more about this topic in the article Linking learning objectives to questions in the MemoTrainer. There are even some tips on how to define objectives.

When the MemoTrainer is based on learning objectives, it is advisable to set the training level higher than 'Adequate', because with each MemoTraining the learner will see a different question about that objective.

Answering questions in the MemoTrainer that are linked to a learning goal, only affects the retention of a particular learning goal, and not the general progress on the goals. The overall progress on goals can only be increased by doing activities where objectives are linked to the questions. See the Tutorial: Creating an adaptive learning path for participants for this.
